Dr Roddy Walsh
I am a computational genomics scientist, currently based at City St. George's University in London, UK, and also affiliated with Amsterdam UMC. After spending some time in industry, I joined the lab of Professor Stuart Cook at Imperial College in 2011 and became hooked on the fascinating and complex genetics underlying the heritable cardiac diseases associated with sudden death in the young. After obtaining a PhD at Imperial College, I moved to the Netherlands to work with Professor Connie Bezzina at Amsterdam UMC, broadening my research focus to the genomics of Brugada syndrome and the complex non-Mendelian genetics of cardiac diseases.
Our lab's research interests focus on exploring novel and complex aspects of the genetic architecture of these conditions to enhance diagnosis and risk prediction in patients, families and the general population. This includes developing approaches to investigate novel genetic risk factors like intermediate effect and non-coding genetic variation, expanding research to understudied populations, and ensuring the translation of research findings to clinical genomics practice.
Alex Lipov
Alex is a final year PhD student based in the lab of Connie Bezzina at Amsterdam UMC. His project encompassed several studies spanning different cardiac diseases and genetic mechanisms, including the complex spectrum of dominance and recessiveness in genetic cardiomyopathies and the study on non-coding variation at the SCN5A locus in Brugada syndrome.
Professor Connie Bezzina
Connie is Professor of Expermental Cardiology at Amsterdam UMC and is a leading researcher in investigating the complex genetics of inherited cardiac diseases. We collaborate on studies exploring the genetic basis of Brugada syndrome and as part of the DCM-NEXT consortium.
Professor Elijah Behr
Elijah is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at City St. George's and is a leading investigator into the causes of sudden death syndromes and the inherited arrhythmias that can cause these events. We collaborate on studies that explore the genetic basis of arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death.
Dr Juan Pablo Ochoa
Juan Pablo is a cardiogenetics researcher at the Spanish National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) in Madrid and has been at the forefront of the discovery of novel cardiomyopathy genes and variant classes. We collaborate on studies on these novel factors (e.g. intermediate effect variants) and through the DCM-NEXT consortium.
Dr Christopher Carroll
Chris leads the Mitochondrial Research Group at City St. George's University with a research focus on the genetics and mechanisms of mitochondrial disease and the development of high throughput functional assays. We collaborate on research at the intersection of mitochondrial and cardiac disease, e.g. PPA2 deficiency syndrome.
